THE THAMES HARBOUR.
ADDITIONAL BERTHAGE. BOARD APPROVES SCHEME. [BY TELEORAI'H. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] THAMES. Wednesdar. At a meeting of the Thames Harbour Board the engineer, Mr. E. F. Adams, asked members to consider the advisability of extending the berthage shoreward an additional 200 ft. This would give better facilities tor the discharge of shipping, and if carried out now could be done at a much cheaper cost than at a later stage. The additional cost would be £3500. In supporting the proposal Mr. E. N. Miller said the original scheme had only provided for small berthage and the suggestion was a decided advantage. He was anticipating the time when more than one shed would be required. This was only the first section of the major scheme which would come in the future. They could not afford to be reckless but this was an excellent addition and they should carry it out. The outlook for the harbour was very promising. One or two things had come to his notice that showed that'outside people were watching what Thames was doing and they were thinking of making Thames a central depot. The railway and harbour could work together in promoting the town's prosperity. It was evident that the harbour was going to be a pronounced success. He moved that the recommendation of the engineer he approved. Mr. Lowe seconded and the motion was carried unanimously. Good progress is being maintained with the work of reclaiming land upon which the new shed is to be built.
