Wednesday A young teacher, Leonard Arthur Fielder, was charged to-day with wilfully attempting to set fire to Clifton Terrace School. Evidence was given that a packet of powder, with a lighted cord attached, was found in a bundle of papers in the male teachers' room. Accused was seen to leave the room just previously. Accused, who was given a good character by various witnesses, said he was experimenting with the powder, which he had found on the school premises.. He had lighted the cord, and when he heard someone coming he threw the package away, thinking his action would seeioa foolish. When he threw the package down he thought he had extinguished the string by pificiiing it. He denied any intention of causing damage.
