BAD STRETCH OF ROAD.

CONDEMNED BY MR. BOLLARD TAUPIRI TO NGARUAWAHIA. NO PROSPECT OF REMEDY. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON. Wednesday. The bad condition of the Main South Road between Tanpiri and Ngaruawahia was referred to by the Hon. R. F. Bollard, Minister for Internal Affairs, when speaking at Tanpiri last evening. Mr. Bollard said the road was no credit to those who controlled it and he had wished he had those responsible for its condition in the car with him when he passed over it. As soon as he had an opportunity of seeing *he chairman of the Main Highways Board he would draw his attention to the matter. The stretch of road referred to is about four miles in lengt.li. It was metalled some years ago, but the heavy traffic has worn the road into large pot holes and quagmires of mud. Some idea of its condition may be gathered from the fact that the motor trip between Taupiri and Ngaruawahia occupied longer than that between Ngaruawahia and Hamilton, which is three times the distance. Inquiries made in Hamilton show that there is no immediate prospect of anything being done to repair the road, which is under the control of the Waikato County Council. The clerk, Mr. T. B. Insoll, said that since April the council had spent £l5O on maintenance on the stretch, and in point of mileage that was more than had been spent- on any other part of the Huntiv riding, in which the four miles of road referred to are situated. Mr. Insoll said unless the Highways Board paid the council a heavy subsidy there was no likelihood of further money being spent on the road by the council in the near future. The road has been subject to very heavy through bus traffic lately and the prolonged spell of wet weather has caused it to deteriorate rapidly. LTnless something is done very soon all the money spent on the Kangirin hills road will bo of little value owing to the inability of motorists to go further south than Taupiri.
