YAWL A TOTAL LOSS.
MERGANSER OFF PORTUGAL. DETAILS OF THE WRECK. {Received 8.5 p.m.) Renter. LISBON. Oct. 5. Mr. W. Unbfc, who, with his daughter was,endeavouring to make the voyago from Plymouth to Isew Zealand in the yawl Merganser, tried to enter the small port at Caminha to replenish 'his water supplies. He had no pilot, and as a result ran his craft on to a sandbank. The sea immediately filled the Merganser, which sank. The wreck was seen by local fishermen, who were unable to approach owing to the weather. Lifelines wer«e flu ig to the yawl, and the Unitts were rescued, Mr. Unitt suffered mi aor injuries, hut his daughter was not hurt The yawl is a total losii. The fishermeD salvaged two chests containing clothes from the Merganser, but everything else was lost, including the wireless fittings of the yawl and her nautical apparatus. Efforts to raise the Merganser proved unavailing. Mr. Unitt is awaiting a Consular paper to enable him to return to England.
