MILFORD PROMENADE.
EXPLANATION OF SCHEME. PUBLIC MEETING SATISFIED. The scheme devised by Mr. A. Slinger, borough engineer at Takapuna, for commencement of the formation of a promenade along the Rangitoto Channel waterfront of the borough, by utilising p«rt of the outlay upon the sewerage works tn the Milford Beach neighbourhood, was explained on the spot yesterday afternoon to a public meeting of ratepayers, attended by about 40 people. The Mayor, Mr. J. D- Morison, Mr. A. H. Wilkie, chairman of the borough's Public Services Committee, and Mr. J. D. Bodle, assistant engineer, were the principal speakers. It was made plain that one purpose of the meeting was to enlighten the residents of Milford upon the details of the proposal, which is to substitute for en underground storage tunnel through pn vately-owned land a corresponding structure in concrete, outside high-water mark, for about 3200 ft. to the westward of Black Bock. That structare would be employed as the outer wali of a roadway along the waterfront, to be reclaimed in course of time, the roadway to be eventually linked m with a seaside promenade extending from the foot ol Clifton Road to that of Milford Road. A secondary purpose was to indicate to the owners of the properties along which the storage tunnel would extend—those between Ocean View Road and Cecil Road—the advantages they would gain by conceding, say, 15ft, of their frontages to the borough, in order that the concrete tunnel might not err croach upon the area of beach sand available to bathers. The matter was freely discussed by the meeting, and after many questions' had been answered by the municipal represen tatives the proposal was viewed with unannriou favour. Resolutions were passed expressing thanks to the boroughengineer for pui'tuig forward the scheme, and to the Mayot and councillors present. The next will be the opening of negotiations between the borough authorities and the property owners with a view to 'bringing about the concession of the strjp of land required, which was described by satmf< of the speakers as b small concession in exchange for a great gain in the values of the properties affected.
