RUBBER IN SAMOA.
— PROGPECTS OF PLANTATIONS. [from our own correspondent. ] APIA, Sept. 21. Rubber continues to interest Samoan residents, Mr. J. Nixon-'Westwood, who has returned from London, says, that Western Samoa Estates, Limited, will commence operations on it* plantations. Furthermore, he has asked permission to bring special labour from the Malay States to produce the rubber. The administration will not put any obstacle in the way of this proposal, and it is understood that permission has already been granted, and the necessary expert labout sent for. Inquiries are also Coming in to the Administration from outside as to the prospects of acquiring rubber properties. The general opinion is that the price of rubber is going to hold good for at least the next five years. Mr. Paterson is still carrying on at Alsfsa for tho Government nrfd has turned out quite a stack of rubber sheets, lie is doing excellent work, and considers now that lie is producing the goods on the plantation at lOd a lb. This is particularly good news and puts the old beach idea of 2s 6d well m the barkground Nothing definite has been derided about the the large Government estate at Solatia, but inquiries have already been made about it.
