It is ' authoritatively stated that the attitude of the Dominions Office toward the proposal of Australian States that local Governors should be appointed is as follows '* As the growth of the Constitution of the Empire develops, there' is no reason why the Dominions should ' not so act. The position of Governor is not prerogative of a man born in the British I^les. • "Any member of the Empire iis equally entitled to represent tho King, but the Dominions Office is somewhat chai'y of the appointment of a local man. ' The past record of such a man is boupd to include some remark allying him to a particular party or cause, thereby allowirig a: loophole to his opponents to declare him to bo biased in case he should bo called upon to make an important decision, such as the granting of a political dissolution. ' : f OPPOSITION TO PROPOSAL NEW SOUTH WALES PROTEST. A. and N.2. SYDNEY. Sept. 25. A memorial signed by 44 members of the Legislative Assembly and 36 members of the Upper House, protesting against any alteration in the present system of appointing State Governors, has been despatched to the British Government. It contains the names of all the members of the Coalition Party and the Country Party in the Assembly and three Independents.
