THIEF AND BURGLAR.
OFFENCES AT TE PUKE. FINGER-PRINT EVIDENCE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT, ] TE PUKE, Friday. A man named Charles Stromberg, alias Charles A. Barker, appeared on remand al To Puke from Auckland, before Messrs. Cuff and Lemon, J.P.'s, on three charges of breaking and entering local premises, two charges of theft, and a chargo of being a rogue and vagabond. Detective Culloty prosecuted, and accused conducted his own defence. The hearing occupied two days, 22 witnesses being called by the police. Accused was committed for trial on three charges of breaking and entering the Farmers' Union Trading Company, the railway station, and Mr. L. Kerr's shop. On a charge of theft of two bottle of ale, one of gin, a wheelbarrow and a pick accused was convicted and sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour. The other theft charge and that of being a rogue and vagabond were dismissed. The police stated that accused had a record of previous convictions for various offences of a similar nature. Mr. C. M. Francis, of the criminal registration branch, Wellington, gave evidence as to finding accused's finger prints on the gin bottle. V
