NEWMARKET AFFAIRS.
OPENING OF THE LIBRARY.
The Newmarket Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, presiding. ' The town clerk reported that the arrangements in connection with the establishment of the public library had reached the stage when it was possible to indicate the date on which the library might be opened to the public. The date suggested was next Monday. There was already evidence of public interest, especially in reference to the lending department. There would be about 900 volumes of the latest fiction available to subscribers, and as finances at the disposal of the committee would permit additions of new books would be made on a . fairly extensive scale. r
In reference to treating the surface, of roads constructed in concrete with bituminous material, the Streets Committee recommended that the engineer be instructed to take the necessary steps to carry out such tests as would serve as a'guide-to the operations of the> council in future work. A contribution of £2 2s was mkde to the Labour Day Celebrations Committee. The engineer reported that the Power Board staff was now engaged in erection of residential street fittings. The three orna» mental fittings near the reserve would be put into service as soon as the necessary connections were made.
The survey of the Victoria Crescent overbridge approaches was to be commenced at an early date. The Streets Committee recommended the Mayor to meet the owners of the property with a view to entering into negotiations for the purchase .of the area necessary before work on the bridge could be commenced, Mr. T. N. Sampson gave notice of motion ; " That the time has arrived for provision /of a rest room for the ladies of the borough."
