NORTHCOTE BOROUGH.
DRAINAGE SYSTEM READY.
The Northcote Borough Council met on Tuesday evening, the Mayor, Mr. C. A. Deuxberry, presiding. The drainage engineer, Mr. F. E. Powell, intimated that all the sewers of the main scheme were ready for use, and houses could be connected to the system. An instalment of £SOOO of the drainage loan was granted by the State Advances office.
The secretary of the Auckland Provincial Water Board wrote stating that j the chairman, Mr. E. H. Potter, would be ' willing to meet the council to furnish all particulars, but "was not prepared to address public meetings. The council decided to refer the reply to the committee of the Provincial Water Board.
It was resolved to inform the Department of Agriculture that an abattoir was not necessary at Northcote, as the butchers' shops drew their supplies from abattoirs established under the Act. The Devonport Ferry Company, which had agreed to lend, at 5f per cent., the money for the. recreation loan, intimated that as the council had informed the directors that the ratepayers who interviewed it had no authority to negotiate on its behalf, the matter could be regarded as closed. The Birkenhead Borough Council is to be asked for an annual contribution of £25 toward the general maintenance of the Northcote Fire Brigade. The captain of fhe brigade was authorised to equip the old reel with hose, and to detail two firemen on duty at Northcote daring the absence of the brigade in the neighbouring district.
It was resolved to combine the positions of foreman of works and building inspector, at a salary of £325 a year,' and to call applications.
