COMMUNITY SINGING.
ENTHUSIASTIC SESSION. Yesterday's session of community singing was particularly hearty and melodious, there being a large attendance. The enthusiasm with which the programme was rendered, although partly duo" to the fact that most of the numbers sung were old favourites, was also due in part to the influence of the Rev. Jasper Calder as song-leader. Miss Ellen Melville, presided, and Miss Dorothy Williams acted as accompanist. Mrs. Westard, the 70-year-old soloist who had previously delighted the gatherings with her admirable rendering of old songS) was again heard, this time in "Ben Bolt." Another soloist who volunteered in response to Mr. Calder's. invitation for someone to sing the New Zealand hymn, "God Defend New Zealand," was a great success, receiving an ovation. Mr. Calder also "conspired" with three others to sing a quartette from the opera', "Dorothy," accompanying tho singing with appropriate gestures, to the delight of a section of the audience. His rendering of a Maori song which he wished the audience to learn caused even greater hilarity.
