MANAWATU GORGE.
EANDSMDE BLOCKS ROAD. NO TRAFFIC FOR SOME DAYS. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] PALMERSTON NORTH, Wednesday. An extensive slip has taken place in the Manawatu Gorge, approximately 7000 yards of the hillside coming down at the Woodville end'of tne road and blocking about a chain and a-half of the Jilghway. The fall occurred at one portion of the ro4d which has been widened out with concrete by the Board of Control, but in spite of tne size of the slip no, damage was done, even the railing being left intact. About half the soil fell into the river, which, owing to the narrow channel at thie point, was temporarily dammed. Tho pent-up water eventually rushed away with a roar. The work of clearing the debris was commenced immediately. To-day there ware about 15 men engaged. However, it is «ot anticipated that the. road will be free for traffic until Saturday at the earliest. If toe weather is unfavourable the work may take longer.
