LAST SATURDAY'S CONTEST. 1 A correspondent, "T.W.," writes as fol- , lows regarding last Saturday's match between Hawke's Bay and Auckland with re- , ference to a letter published on Tuesday criticising the play of the local team:— "Is not the criticism of 'C.R.B.' somewhat insulting to the members of the Auckland Rugby fifteen, who put up such a thrilling gfime against Hawke's Bay last Saturday? It is grand to hear of the "has beens," and comparisons are interesting if we all allow for the different times. 'Shades of Departed Players!' he says. But now-a-days the defence is so breezy that'a player with the ball does not get space to cast .a shadow. I venture to say that the New Zealand Rugby team chosen to play New South Wales at Eden Park next Saturday is the strongest that ever chased an oval football. I have ■ had the fortune to see both the famous All Black teams in Britain and New Zealand and if ever there was a better back than the prese'ht A. E. Cooke, or a forward to equal Maurice Brownlie . since the days I lived next door to Jack Tairoa, and. first saw .Rugby, I should like to be reminded of him.'' NEPIA AND LEAGUE. FURTHER DENIAL MADE. A further denial of the report that he has been engaged by tho Hull League Football Club to play in England was made yesterday by G. Nepia, the All Black Rugby fullback. When his attention was drawn to a ■ cablegram from England, published yesterday. which stated that the English club had officially confirmed the story of his engagement and that he was expected to arrive there about Christmas, Nepia replied to the effect that' the facts were incorrect and that was not going.
