ATTITUDE OF BRITAIN.
SOLIDITY OF THE EMPIRE.
Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 1.5 a.m.) LONDON. Aug. 10.
Tho Daily Telegraph's diplomatic correspondent says the conversations between M. Briand and Mr Austen Chamberlain were prlvato and informal. This was in order not to ruftlo German susceptibilities by tho suspicion that Britain and Franco wero elaborating a treaty which Germany would bo requested to sign after tho semblance of a discussion.
Tho British Government has decided that national sovereignty and tho solidity of tho Empire must bo preserved on tho supreme issue of peaco or war, find that Britain is not to bind herself absolutely to intervene in a disp te, but generally to refer a casus foederis to the Leaguo of Nations. In this way Britain will be secured against becoming unduly involved in war.
Tho Polish issue is bornd to remain tho crux of the situation., says tho correspondent, and any attempt to ignore it will be fraught with grave peril.
