TAUPO WATER SCHEME.
POSITION OF NORTH SHORE. LAKE PUPUK.E OR TAUPO. The proposed scheme for a water supply from Lake Taupo was outlined by Mr. W. A. Gray at a meeting of the Waitemata Chamber of Commerce on Monday evening. The scheme for bringing the water supply over the 135 miles of pipe-line from Lake Taupo to Auckland was dealt with and the purpose of the break pressure reservoirs en route was explained. The point of particular interest for the North Shore boroughs is the feasibility and cost of carrying the pipe-line across the harbour. This, it was explained, could be achieved either by tunnelling or by a pipe-line on the bed of the harbour, running out from the Point Chevalier reefs and connecting with the North Shore at Kauri Point. Under the proposed scheme the main pipe-line would thence be carried to the respective borough boundaries. During the discussion which . followed the address Mr. J. D. Morrison, Mayor of Takapuna, stated there was a good deal in this scheme to commend it to the North Shore boroughs. The present supply from Lake Pupuke was limited and unsatisfactory from the point of quality. Mr. T. Lamont, Mayor of Devonport, said the matter required a good deal of consideration. He was of the opinion that the Lake Pupuke supply could be augmented at a considerably less cost than would be involved in the Taupo scheme.
In thanking Mr. Gray for his address, Mr. F. Marks suggested that Messrs. Gray and Potter be asked to address a public meeting at Devonport at a later date in order that the North Shore residents might have the opportunity of gaining further information regarding the scheme.
