WOODLANDS SWAMP AREA.

COSTLY DRAINAGE SCHEME. A CONFERENCE PROPOSED. [Ei* ' TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON. Tuesday. Tlic report, of the Government lands drainage engineer, Mr. 0. N. Campbell, 011 the drainage of the Woodlands swamp area came before the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce last evening. Mr. A. M. Bisley said that tne Government had perhaps been a long time in bringing down the report but the chamber must feel gratified at tho comprehensive and | thorough survey that had been undertaken. He made reference to the suggestion in the report, that all tho drainage boards in • the area should be formed into 0110 board, and thought that this was liVoly to .cause difficulty. He suggested that there should be a. conference of the controlling bodies concerned, with the committee originally set up to go into tho matter, and representatives of tho chamber. Tho speaker also raised tho question of a Government, subsidy on the work, pointing out that it would bo almost impossible for tho land owners of tho area to raise a loan of £152,000, tho estimated cost of the proposals. Mr. A. Morris remarked that a smaller scheme, costing only about £40,000, had failed to obtain a Government subsidy on • tho ground that there was no money available. He, therefore, considered it improbable that a subsidy would bo forthcoming for the Woodlands scheme. The secretary was instructed to arrange | for a conference.
