THE PACIFIC NATIONS.

NEED FOR UNDERSTANDING. PRIME MINISTER'S VIEWS. The necessity for cultivating good understanding with our neighbours in tho Pacific was emphasised by the Prime Minister, Mr. Coates, at tho ceremony of laying tho foundation-stone of the Auckland War Memorial Museum on Saturday. The Prime Minister referred to our relations with the Japanese and said we should remember the service they rendered to us during the war when, by their good offices we wero ablo to send our transports overseas with a feeling of security by reason of the presence of tho powerful Japanese convoys. He then mentioned tho coming visit of the American Fleet and said tho mingling of tho visitors with our own people should do much to foster a spirit of goodwill. The visit would have an influence for the better understanding between the peoples of the Pacific for the preservation of peace. After all, most problems between nations camo down to a matter of understanding ono another. It must not be forgotten, however, that until war was done away with it would bo necessary for the Empire to do what was reasonable in protecting tho trade routes, and he felt sure tho peopio would be behind any Government having that object in view.
