SUPPRESSION OF NAMES.
Sir,—-I think it is just about time that tho practice of suppressing names in connection with serious offences heard at the' S.M. Courts was discontinued. In this morning's issue I notice no less than seven, some of them so serious that it is really encouraging crime to allow tho names of the offenders to be suppressed. It is about time that the prohibition cam? paign was started. With some magistrates it would seem that a lawyer has only to plead that his client was under the influence of drink for him to be let off easily. In one caso this morning a man was convicted of using obscene language, and the S.M. casually remarked that the case was of no public interest and the name was suppressed. Is this magistrate so accustomed to hearingobscene language used that it is a matter of indifference to him ? Do The Right Thing. June 9,. 1925.
