MAORI'S FALSE PRETENCES. NINE MONTHS IN PRISON. Falsely representing that ho was a cousin of Nopia and a brother pf Paewai, tho All Black footballers, and also that he had £7525 deposited in tho Bank of Now Zealand in Auckland, a Maori, Peter PaeWai, aged 25, obtained from John Bryant small sums of money, totalling £2 14s, between February 21 and March 7. • An eighth charge of stealing £3 bolonging to Ratan Singh, on May 25, was also admitted by Paewai when lie appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.j in tho Police Court yesterday. _ Chiof-Detectivo Cununings said accused Was comirtg "before the Court too often, although ho had been liberally treated in tho past, 11 . A list of accused's previous convictions for. theft and false pretences was handed tp - tho magistrate,' who imposed a sentence of six months' hard labour for theft and ono of three months on one charge of false pretences, the sentences to be cumulative. Accused'? was convicted and discharged on the remaining charges. . , ■ 1
