DOES PUBLICITY PAY?

Sir, —In 1G24 the province of British Columbia (Canada), following up its previous efforts, spent £6OOO in advertising its advantages as a tourist area. Last year tho number of visitors increased by 50 per cent, to a total of 300,000, and they were estimated to have spent £600,000, which surely is a very good return on tho publicity investment. In California the "various centres are co-operating in an advertising campaign under tho title of the Ail-Year Club and plan to spend £200,000 on advertising in 1925. A short time back settlers were arriving in the city of Los Angeles a± the rate of 5000 a vreck, and advertising is given the chief credit for the population of Los Angdes reaching 1,000,000 in such a short time. If there are private companies in New Zealand readily spending £20,000 to £25,000 per annum in advertising their products, surely the Dominion with a capital value of over £500,000,000 can afford to spend an equal or bigger amount in broadcasting its remarkable advantages overseas? G. M. Fowlds.
