YOUNG WOMAN STABBED.

Culhanc, at North Carlton, Melbourne, early one morning last week, and savagely attacked Miss May Cnlhane. who was wounded in the hand. She wrested the murderous weapon from her assailant, and her cries brought assistance. Later, Francis John Conway, aged 28, tram conductor, was charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Miss CuLhane. t Miss Culhane was sharing a lieu with her sister. Another sister, sleeping in a separate bed in the'same room, was awakened by a noise which she thought was made by a rat. She woko her sisters, and the three girls were startled to see a man in ithe room, who struck a match. After glancing around the room, the intruder walked toward Miss May Cullume's bed, and stabbed her in the right hand. He made three attempts to stab her again, but she clung tenaciously to Ms wrist, screaming for help. The household, was alarmed, and Mr. .Joseph Culhane, who is a professional ■boxer, Was the first to enter the room. He grappled with the intruder, secured him and handed him over to the police. When they arrived, two or three jagged rents in tho bed clothes showed where the knife thrusts had just missed the girl s body. A carving knife was found on the floor, and on the window sill, through which entry apparently had been made, a pair of boots was found. The police were informed that Mrs. Cecilia Conwav, wife of the accused, and a daughter of "Mr. W. P. Culhane, separated from her husband about a week previously. On account of ill-treatment alleged against her husband, and threats by him, she returned to her parents.
