AUSTRALIA AND CANADA. NEGOTIATIONS PROCEEDING. POSITION STILL UNCERTAIN. By Telegraph—Press Association—Ccpyiicbt. (Received G.E p.m.) A. and N.Z. OTTAWA. Apl. 16. Tho Prime Minister, Mr. W. L. Mackenzie King, stated in tho House of Commons to-day, in reply to questions concerning the proposed reciprocal trade treaty with Australia, that tho Australian Government had taken no action regarding an alteration in its tariff, but that Canada was still negotiating with the Commonwealth regarding such changes as aro to be mfle in tho Canadian tariff. Until tho latter alterations were mado nothing further could bo said. This statement is taken to mean that the Australian Government, so far, has not agreed to any alteration in the conditions oi the trcity, which the percentage of Canadian labour and materials which must enter into any product before it can secure preference in Australia. It also is presumed that tho Canadian Government is still desirous of securing alterations in the treaty's proviso, which fixes tho preference to be received by Australian fruits in Canada. A fear is expressed in pro-treaty circles that Australia will not bo willing to roopen the treaty which already has secured tho Australian Parliament's approval.
