COMFORTS FOR WORKERS.
NEW Y.M.C.A. HALL. MEN NOT BEING "PAMPERED." fH? TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] DAECrAVILLE, Wednesday. A new Y.M.C.A. building was opened by the Hon. J. G. Coates at Pukehuia, near the terminus of the present activities of the Public Works Department on railway construction on the Waiotira-Kiriko-purii section. The building has been brought from the Omana Tunnel to the waterfront, in common with tho general removal of Public Works' activities, to the riverside. The department provided the building originally and was responsible for its removal and re-erection on the new site. Mr. Coates stated that he must express his appreciation of the services rendered by the Y.M.C.A. His department wanted to get tho very best services from the workers and that could only he done by giving them tho very best conditions possible. To remove the buildings from the tunnel had cost them iri excess of £4OO, but that was nothing provided they could make the lives of their employees, their wives and families, more attractive and encourage good men to the works. He did not agree with those who thought that his department pampered the ►workers. The work was being done quicker and better than ever before. In conclusion, the Minister stated that it was his intention to endeavour to visit every Public Works job at least twice a year and get to know the workers and their difficulties.
