SEARCH FOR OIL.
DISCOVERY IN QUEENSLAND. The discovery of oil at. the Longreach Town Council's new water bore has afforded what is claimed to be the most signal proof to date of the fact already recognised that the artesian basin of Queensland is not devoid of petroleum eontents. The deputy-chief geologist., Mr. Ball, who visited the bore, in a report, states; —"Even if the. present were the maximum production, I should regard the occurrence as of the greatest, importance." The Minister for Mines, announcing last week that the Lander Oil Company's bore at Or alio was down 2200 ft., said that, the company did not expect, that .conditions similar to those which occurred in the. first bore would obtain till a depth of about 2600 ft. was reached.
