POLICE SPRING SURPRISE.
COUNTRY HOTEL RAIDED. BAR PARTY ON A SUNDAY. [FA- TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAREI. Monday. Senior-Sergeant O'Grady and a constable arrived unannounced at the Parua Bay Hot-el late on the afternoon of Sunday, February 8. The hotel is "miles away from anywhere." They walked in a back way known to both, and entered the bar, to find several, men playing cards. One had a, bottle of beer, and alt declined to deny having had a spot, and the proprietor. Ernest Devan, admitted that the poliea had caught him. The proprietor appeared before Mr. ft. W. Tate, S.M.. to-day, cliarsred with keeping the premises open for the sale of liquor during hours when they were supposed to be closed. He pleaded guilty. It was urged in his behalf, however, that he was aroused from a siesta by some boarders, and took them to the bar Mist ead of a private room. Some others joined the party, and Mhen the p.olice came along. Devat: was convicted and fined £2. with costs, 7s.
