DE GARIS CHARGED.
RELEASED ON BAIL. TRANSACTION WITH ESCORT. A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE. Feb. 12. Cuthbert J. do Garis appeared before a justice of the peace In the city watchliouse to-day on a, charge of obtaining £3OO by means of a valueless cheque. Accused was remanded, and bail was fixed at £3OO. Talking with friends after his release, De Garis said that while he should have been allowed to return to Australia by himself, his escort was a gentleman. " Why," ho added, " I even sold him two blocks of land on the way across!"
