ARRANGING YOUR BOOKS.

Have you ever noticed what a sorry jumble nine out of ten people make of their book-shelves ? Tall books and short books placed cheek by jowl—Volume I. here and Volume 11. goodness knows where —books upside down, books stuffed in anyhow, books laid on the tops of shelves. However few or many books you possess, it's worth while to arrange them sensibly and conveniently. You want your books so that you can find them. And, therefore, choose your system of arrangement and stick to it. You may elect to arrange according to subject (and this is really the best way), or you may arrange by similar bindings, though, after all. since it's the inside oi a book that matters most, one doesn't recommend this course. At any rate, whatever you do choose, keep to it. _ ■Don't, please, stand books on their heads. What would you think if you saw a picture hung upside down Don't lay books lengthwise along the tops of the books in the shelves. lo begin with, it spoils the bindings. And, moreover, books so placed nearly always finish up by slipping down behind the row, with a consequent waste of time and temper in hunting for them when they are wanted. If you have children old enough, and fond enough of books to be entrusted with the task, it is a capital plan to make one (or all in turns) into your librarian. Children love responsibility, and they cannot acquire the habit of taking proper care of books too young. One point more! Keep a special corner for . borrowed books, whether from library or from your friends shelves. Thus shall you save many pennies in fines, and, quite possibly, a tew valuable friendships! A non-returned book has been the cause of more coolnesses than you might think.
