A COSTUME WIG.

In these days a wonderful and striking witr is an integral part of every fancy dress costume, but not made of real hair, of course. Carpet, wool, tinsel thread, floss silk, string, and bebe ribbon give us wide choice. These quaint wigs are quite easy to manufacture, and with very little time, trouble or expense, anyone could make a varied collection. The first tiling to do is to make a skull cap to fit closely over the head and conceal one's hair. This should match the tone of the material used for the essential part of the wig. The cap must be soft and pliable, but strong; cotton-backed satin or sateen do very well for the purpose. For a full "jazz" wig the cap may be merely a bathing cap-like bag slipped over the head and held by a narrow elastic, but one intended as the foundation for a close, smooth wig should fit the head well and be stretched tight across the forehead at all events, its line being concealed under the artificial *' hair." A few inches of circular elastic at the nape of the "neck will make it fit closely. Wool of a finer texture than carpet wool and tinsel thread is better arranged in loops rather than with cut ends. Don't forget that the finer the material the more you will require of it. Wigs made of bebe ribbon are extremely smart in two colours, magpie or of some bright tint edged with gold or silver. Never be afraid of colour in a fancy wig. If you do not choose gold, silver or white, the more vivid it is the better. Scarlet, jade, ultramarine, organe, deep crimson are tints that lend themselves to this artificial treatment. " Natural " colourings are to be avoided if you want to get the best effect.
