LEVEL CROSSING RULES.
LORRY DRIVER'S BREACH. SEQUEL TO A COLLISION. " VERY DANGEROUS" PLACE. Decision in the prosecution by the Railway Department of John Wilson (Mr. Osburne Lilly), for failing to stop before driving his motor-lorry across the railway line at the Blake Street level crossing at Avondale, was delivered by Mr. J. W, Poynton, S.M., in the Police Court, yesterday. Defendant asserted it was impossible to see more than two chains up or down the railway line at a distance of 15ft. from it and that no warning whistle had been sounded by the enginedriver, Mr. Poynton said the crossing had been visited and the Bench was of opinion that had defendant stopped before crossing all would have been well. The crossing was admittedly very dangerous, and in view of the damage caused to defendant's lorry by the resultant collision no penalty would be inflicted. Defendant would be convicted and ordered to pay £6 2s costs. Mr. Hubble, for the department, withdrew a further charge of attempting to pass over tho railway line when it was not clear.
