NURMI'S NEW RECORD. INDOOR TRACK AT NEW YORK. (Received 9.35 p.m.) Reuter. NEW YORK. Jan. 27. At the international indoor track meeting Nurmi, the Finnish runner, won the three-quarter mile event, breaking the world's record for the distance. His time was 3m. 3 4-ss. Nurmi defeated four other rivals. Willie Ritola, the Finnish-American runner, broke the world's record for the three miles event for the second time within a few days. His tiine was 15m. 45., or 7 3-ss. less than his time for the same distance on Saturday. Harold Osborn (America) broke the world's indoor high jump record by a full inch. He jumped 6ft. 6|in. ' CRICKET IN SYDNEY. SHEFFIELD SHIELD MATCH. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 11.5 p.m.) SYDNEY. Jan. 28. The Sheffield Shield cricket match, New South Wales v. Victoria, was resumed to-day. Victoria in their first innings made 502 runs (Willis 100, Blackie 23). Willis batted brilliantly throughout. Scot, took five wickets for 149 runs. New South Wales in their second innings compiled 152 (Nock 51, Kippax 40). Hartkopf took three wickets for 36, and Hendry two for 29. New South Wales collapsed in their second innings, and there, was a procession back to the pavilion. The batting was very dull and slow throughout, hut this may have been due to the excessive heat, as the city was sweltering in the throes of a heat-wave. PROFESSIONAL BILLIARDS. SMITH VERSUS! McCONACHY. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 10.5 p.m.) LONDON. Jan. 27. In the billiards match, Smith v. Clark McConachy (New Zealand), the former has now scored 10,488. McConachy (.receives 3000) has made 9552, including breaks of 275 and 281. ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL. TOUR OF AUSTRALIA. A. and N.Z. LONDON. Jan. 27. The Daily Mail says a large number of names have been sent in I y Soccer players desirous of joining the team to tour Australia under the management of Mr. J. Lewis. Negotiations lor an extension of the tour to New Zealand failed, owing to difficulty in obtaining financial guarantee.
