SAVING WHILE IN GAOL.
LONGER SENTENCE GRANTED. FUND TO START LIFE ANEW. A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. Dec. 20. A man named Jackson, convicted of a series of charges of thefts of workmen's tools, and sentenced to a year's imprisonment, requested the Judge to declare him an habitual criminal, thereby securing a longer sentence.
The Crown Prosecutor stated that Jackson considered that three or four years spent in gaol would remove him from temptation, give him an opportunity to reform, and enable him to start life again with the money, which he estimated at £300, he had earned during his imprisonment. The Judge, remarking on the largeness of the sum, said that when the amount became generally known, there would be an increase in these applications. He granted Jackson's request.
