THEFT ON A STEAMER.
WOMAN STEALS A WATCH. A VICTIM TO LIQUOR. [by telegraph.—own- correspondent.] WELLINGTON. Sunday. On a charge of the theft of a watch and chain valued at £3 15s, the property of Edward Sandford, a domestic servant, named Madge Cecilia Hansbury, appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M., yesterday. It was stated by Sub-Inspector Hollis that the accused was a passenger by the ferry steamer Wahine. During the night she was found in the quarters of one of the stewards with her hand under his pillow. Subsequently he missed his watch and chain, which were found by the police in the possession of the accused.
Defendant stated that she was under tho influence of liquor at tho time and did not know what she was doing.
There were previous convictions against tho accused for assault, drunkenness and using insulting words, said tho subinspector, who was of the opinion that drink was the woman's trouble.
Tho magistrate entered a conviction and ordered accused to come up for sentence if called upon within twelve months. It was also ordered that she take out a prohibition order against herself. " I won't ever touch liquor again," said tho accused as sl«e left, the dock.
