TWO MORE TRAWLERS.
ONE EARLY NEXT YEAR. AUCKLAND FLEET'S ACTIVITIES. EXTENSION TO AUSTRALIA. Two more trawlers will shortly be added to tho Auckland fleet of fishing vessels. Mr. Gilbert Sanford, managing director for Sanfords, Ltd., stated yesterday that his company was now negotiating for the purchase in England of two more up-to-date trawlers to augment the company's fleet. Both vessels, he said, will steam to Now Zealand, and it is expected they will arrive in good time to commence operations in the early part of the New Year. Two of the trawling fleet of Sanfords, Ltd., are being despatched to Sydney to engage in trawling off tho Australian coast. The Albert San, formerly known as the Brolgao, sailed on Thursday evening, arid is due at Sydney on December 28, while the Gilbert San, formerly the , Gunandaal, will' leave Auckland about next Wednesday for Sydney. Both vessels proceed first to the trawling grounds in the Hauraki Gulf to secure catches of fish, afterwards continuing on to Sydney, there to land supplies for tho Sydney markets. Both trawlers will upon dischaige of their catches operate off tho Australian coast. A golden opportunity," said Mr. Gilbert Sinford, "awaits the development of the fishing industry in New South Wales. Tho great difficulty, however," he said, "has been that the owners .of vessels under 500 tons register are required to pay a duty of from 25 to 30 per cent, upon entering Australian waters to engage in trawling." That difficulty had, however, been overcome in tho case of the two trawlers named, inasmuch as they formerly belonged to the New South Wales State Trawling Department, from whom Sanfords, Ltd., had purchased them. The duty having already been once paid they were now free to operate there. "We have," continued Mr. Sanford, "already opened a branch m Sydney, and have registered the company "there as a foreign company and as a branch of the New Zealand business. We shall buy more trawlers for the Australian trade as tho growth of the business wan ants it. We may, too, extend to Melbourne. Alto gether, we are looking forward to a great development of tho industry m the Targe Australian centres."
