THE "YARD"' PUZZLED.
URCHIN SOLVES A MYSTERY. Scotland Yard officials were recently puzzled by the mysterious appearance of a small round object in the carved stone work, about 50ft. above the ground, in the arch which crosses the Yard. Nobody was able to state how it got there, and'investigations and inquiries were made in vain. Various suggestions were forthcoming as to what the object was, among these being a bomb, a pigeon egg, a rotten apple, a lump of putty. Eventually the mystery was cleared up by a ragged urchin who, in fear and trembling, approached a constable and said, "Please, guv'nor, can vou give us our ball back?"
