London's only remaining lioise-drawn " Black Maria " made its last journey recently, and henceforth motor- van, only will he used for conveying prisoners between court- of justice mid prisons. The last of the old-time " Black Marias" has been tailing prisoners on remand from Brixton Prison to various police courts. Since the war Scotland Yard lias made increased use of motor vehicles. All the senior ofliceis at the Vard are provided with motor-ears: divisional detective. ollieera have motor-cycles; and the Flying Squads have motor-van-,. And now .Vim- . mills, when caught, ale to travel by car.
| And what of the future? Shall we sec the 30-luiot liner? It is unlikely, at least with steam propulsion. The IVlauretania, finely moulded as a yacht, and crammed with engines and boilers, is the last, of her type. The heavy-oil engine is coming along fast; and because of its great economy in space, weight and fuel it may well reach the point at which a 30-knot oil-engined liner will prove an attractive proposition to the trans-Atlantic I shipowner.
