BETTING ON A SMALL SCALE. FINE OF £20 IMPOSED. A charge of having loitered in Queen Street for the purpose of betting, was admitted by Louis Charles Bailey, aged 19. (Mr. Hosking), at tho Police Court yesj terday before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., and Mr. A. J. Stratford, J.P. Chief-Detective minings said that the j youth bore a good character. He had j been betting on a small. scale, but might have been acting as an'agent for a bookmaker. Counsel asked for leniency, and for the suppression of accused's name. Mr. Poynton: A bookmaker is. a public nuisance, and does uot deserve that. •; A fine of £20 was imposed, and counsel I asked for time to pay. Mr. Poynton : He will have to pay by I Monday. The Christmas race meeting would give him an opportunity to make it up if lie was allowed further extension. EARLY MORNING ARRESTS: Charges of having broken arid entered a store at Glen Eden on Thursday and of having stolen cigarettes valued at £1 | 19s and £1 3s in cash, were preferred j against Frederick Aloxis Wildman and : Roy Martin. Additional charges of bavI ing converted a motor-car to their own , use were preferred against both men, while Wildman was also charged with tho theft of the car and Martin was charged with having received stolen cigarettes. Both accused were arrested at 5 a.m. yesterday morning by Constable Welsort, who regarded their demeanour in Karangabape Road as suspicious, and searched a handbag carried by one man. A mask, an electric torch and a quantity of cigarettes Wore among the contents. They were remanded until next Saturday, bail being fixed at £200 in the caseof Wildman, and refused to Martin. A BOXER'S FAILING. (.'barges of drunkenness and breach of prohibition order resulted' in the appearance of James St. Martin Tracey (Mr. McLiver), a boxer. Mr. Allan Moody, who appeared for accused's relatives, described him as a " niusancc," and suggested bis detention, at Rotoroa Island. Mr. McLiver said that accused was agreeable, to remaining in tho institution for six months. Sergeant Rowcll: He is going from bad to worse. The magistrate ordered that accused should remain at Jlotoroa for 12 months. Subsequently an order for separation, sought, by Traoov's wife, was granted by Mr. I\ K. Hunt, S.M., by consent. ■ .
