COUNCIL AND MINISTER.

OBJECTION TO A LETTER. "USING THE BIG STICK." That it was not proposed to issue further authority for tho expenditure of Government grants unless tho Waitemata County Council gave earnest proof of its intention regarding a certain road, was the gist of a letter that has been received by that body from tho Public Works Department. The county engineer stated at the meeting of tho council on Thursday that although work on the road in question was iu hand, the programme was being carried out in order ot importance, and the rood would bo dealt with in rotation. Ho quoted figures showing expenditure on the road to date. A strong protest against the tone of tho letter was made by Mr. O'Halloran, who said that if the council "took it lying down" they wero not fit to represent the ratepayers. The chairman, Mr. F. W. Grigg, expressed the opinion that if would be unwise to antagonise tho Minister, who was, however, "using the big stick." It. was decided to supply the Minister with tho engineer's figures regarding the matter.
