GREAT VOLUME OF BUSINESS.

REVIEW BY CHAIRMAN.

Th-i ordinary general meeting of the Bank of New South Wales was held m Sydney on November 28. The chairman. Mr. Thomas Buckland, in moving " lc adoption of the report and balance-sheet, said that the note circulation in New Zealand had decreased by £150,000, and. ntanciing at £481,000, was now lower than it had been for years past. Deposits were £731,000 lower than at this time last year, but the disappearance of the cross entry of £921,700 for war gratuities more than accounted for the difference. The bill payable group showed a decrease of £ 1,132,000, which was caused by a reduction of some £730,000 in London commitments. Tho remaining balance of £400,000 was well distributed among the other items of tho group, and was normal. Tho reserve fund, now £4.150,000, hod increased by £'250,000. On the assets side, coin, nolos and cash balances at hankers showed » reduction of £1,618,000; London items and other banks, an increase of £402,000, and securities a decrease of £ 070,000—in all. £2,156,000. Ot this, £1,201,000 appeared in increased advances, and tho balance was reflected ill tho decrease in bills payable. "So that you may have some idea of tne magnitude <>f our London and foreign business," added tho chairman. "I may mention that our transactions for tho ■ months ended September 30 last, to and from London, were approximately£ss,ooo, ooo. but the margin of profit thereon was unu°u:iliy small, owing to the high premiums which we have had to pay for transferring our funds back from London."

The chairman indicated that the meetings of the bank would in the future be held annually, instead of half-yearly, as formerly.
