MATAMATA AFFAIRS.
THE SALEYARDS PROBLEM.
NEW POST OFFICE SOUGHT.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
MATAMATA. Wednesday.
The threatened closing down of the Matamata saleyards formed the chief topic of discussion at the monthly meeting of the Matamata Chamber of Commerce. The Department of Health requires tho floors and passageways of the yards to be concreted, but the auctioneering companies hold that the yarding at Matamata, in common with other places in the Dominion, are seriously falling off, duo to the increasing tendency to buy stock on tho farms. Under these circumstances the companies do not feel disposed to undertake further heavy expenditure. The chamber decided to request tho Health Department to relax its requirements. in view of the reduced yardings, and the damage the commercial interests of the town would suffer in the event of the yards being closed. The l'iako County Council, replying to' the chamber's representations in regard to the state of the Kereone Road, stated that the worst portion had been metalled. It was hoped that a Government grant would become available for tho remainder.
The need of a new post office was again urged, and the secretary was instructed to write to the Postmaster-General pointing out that the present building was very inadequate and had been condemned by the Public Works Department.
