SPEEDING MOTORISTS.
LARGE BATCH ' OF CASES.
MANY FINES IMPOSED.
WARNING BY MAGISTRATE.
Recent- speed traps set by the Auckland City Council traffic department resulted in tho appearance of over a score of motorists in tho Police Court yesterday, beforo Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M.
The chicf traffic inspector, Mr. G. R. Hogan, said that speeds had been checked over quarter-inilo sections in Manukau Road and Upper Queen Street. In busy traffic hours speeds in excess of 25 miles an hour were dangerous, and prosecutions had been instituted against drivers who had averaged 30 miles an hour or more.
Mr. Poynton agreed that tho motoring public would have to tako warning, since tho statute to operate in tho New Year allowed the imposition of as much as three months' imprisonment for dangerous, driving. Fines were imposed as follows, the speeds also being given : — £5. —E. S. Watts, 39 miles an hour. £3: R J. McQuillan and L. do B. Ricks, 35; H. A. Rouse, 34; L. F. Brooks, 33; L. Belcher, C. Camplin, G. Christoff, and A. F. Dickens, 32; U. Lindsay and F. Maxwell, 31; S. Lowndes, F- C. Smith, E. ~H. Such, and A. Woolley, 30. Tho following drivers of motor-buses were each fined £3: W. H. Baker, 30 miles ap hour; G. M. McFurlane, 32; F. Slinger, 32. A motor-cyclist. H. Ivnight, who averaged 43 miles an hour, was fined £5, and a similar penalty was imposed on G. R. Dawson, whoso speed was 37 miles an hour.
J. Astrclla was fined £2 for crossing Grafton Bridge at 21 miles an hour. G. A. Eddowos was fined £2 for speeding at tho intersection of Karangahapo Road and East Street, and a similar penalty was imposed on R. T. Grant for dangerous driving.
