PITCH AND TOSS.

YOUNG MEN'S PASTIME.

A MAGISTRATE'S CLEMENCY.

Indulgence in the game of chance, "Up the Moot," more popularly known as •'Pitch and Toss," resulted in the appearance of five young men at the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M. All pleaded guilty.

Sergeant Rowell said that the game had been played in Gladstone Road. The stakes were small. Defendants ware all respectable young men.

Mr. Povntou: Have they nothing better to do?

Sergeant Powell: It is a pity to see respectable young fellows amusing themselves in this way. One wonders what is in the minds of the youth these days. Mr. Poynton: Can't they go to a library ? I will not convict them if they will promise to stop playing this game. On receiving this assurance, the magistrate dismissed the cases, under Section 92 of the Justices of the Peace Act.
