CHHISTCHURCH. Friday.
The first travelling art scholarship given by any organisation in the Dominion is about to be instituted. The Imperial Culture Society will provide an opportunity to past or present students of the Canterbury College school of art to continue their studies in painting in the Old World for a period of two years. The society has already set aside £100 for the purpose, and the scheme is made realisable by a gift now made by Mrs. Claude Sawtell, a prominent Christchurch artist, her contribution being subject to a provision that the society collect a further £100 at least.
It is considered that there should be no difficulty in realising more than the stipulated sum. The society's present effort will be -confined to a single scholarship, which will be similar to the Melbourne scheme.
