LARGEST GREENSTONE ADZE
PURCHASE BY MUSEUM.
A highly-valuable addition to tho ethnological section of the Auckland Museum has been mado by tho purchase of the largest greenstone Maori adze yet found. It is a very fine specimen of this phase of Maori workmanship, being 27in. in length, sin. in breadth, and weighing 161b. It is Sin. longer than tho largest exhibit already known, and from its great size there is every reason to believe that it was mado for ce.emonial purposes only. The adze was found in the Waikato district. It was on view at the meeting of the council of the Institute and Museum yesterday, and aroused great interest. Tho action of a sub-committee in acquiring tho implement was approved by tho council on tho motion of the president, Sir James Gunson, the. cost to be met from general funds. Dr. P H. Buck remarked that the museum could not afford to let the opportunity of securing the adze pass. It was unique, and no doubt had been obtained by a chief for ceremonial uses, thus adding to his prestige.
