NATIONAL PARK VISITORS.
ACCOMMODATION QUESTION.
SUGGESTION FOR COTTAGES.
To give an early opportunity to more people to enjoy the wonders of Tongariro National Park under more comfortable conditions, the New Zealand Tourist League has requested the Park Board, pending the erection of a modern hostel, to take advantage of the summer season by erecting cottages and a dining room in order to make provision for all classes of tourists.
Steps have been taken by the league to obtain .support for this resolution from various interested bodies, who have in some cases already replied that supporting resolutions will be forwarded direct to the board.
A few new huts have lately been opened in the park, but conditions with regard to commissariat are such that many potential visitors are kept away. The accommodation advocated by the league consists of a number of huts of one or two rooms surrounding a central dining room and kitchen. The dining room would have wide verandahs to serve as sitting room, etc. The huts could bo turned out by any sawmill in a standardised form, which would enable inexpensive additions to be made to the accommodation from time to time.
The frequency with which this type of accommodation is met in Canadian and American resorts is sufficient evidence of its popularity, according to tho league.
