GALE IN THE PROVINCE.
MINOR DAMAGE REPORTED.
HEAVY RAINFALLS RECORDED. [BY TBLEGBAPH. —OWN COttBESPONDENT. ] TAURANGA. Thursday. A strong north-easterly gale with heavy rain was experienced from four o'clock yesterday afternoon until eight o'clock at night. A heavy sea was running in the harbour, but all the small craft appear to have weathered the storm safely. Branches were smashed off trees in many parts of the borough. A portion of the brick wall of a building in course of construction in Devonport Road- was blowc down. A plate-glass window in business premises in the same street was blown in and smashed to pieces. Slight faults developed in the electricity service, but these were not serious. Generally speaking, the damage in the county was slight.
ROTORUA. Thursday.
A fierce gale from the north and northeast prevailed last nigfit for about- four hoars, the wind blowing with hurricane force, with 2jin. of rain fell. Verandahs were" blown down, many trees uprooted, and fruit trees nearly stripped.. Several launches were blown ashore without much damage.
MOfeRINSVILLE. Thursday.
There was an exceptionally heavy downpour here yesterday, 4.12 in. of rain falling in 24 hours. The storm concluded with a heavy gale. Numbers of hay crops have suffered.
