UNITED STATES CONSUL.
MR. GUNSAULUS RETIRING.
ATTACHMENT TO DOMINION.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
WELLINGTON. Wednesday.
The Consul-General for the United States in New Zealand, Mr. Edwin N. Gunsaulus, is about to retire from the consular service under a new law passed this year, which makes that course compulsory after 25 years' service in the Consular Corps. Mr. Gunsaulus has been about a year in* New Zealand, having previously been in similar posts at Pernambuco, Cork, Toronto, Quebec, Johannesburg, Singapore and Halifax. Interviewed to-day, Mr. Gunsaulus said that during his term in the Dominion he had been the recipient of many acts of personal'kindness from Ministers of the Crown, State Department officers, public bodies, business men and the citizens generally. The attachment he and Mrs. Gunsaulus had formed with New Zealand had impelled them to decido to spend some months touring the country prior to their departure for the United States about March next. "I have formed a very high opinion of New Zealand and its institutions," he remarked. "I believo that this sturdy young democracy has an important destiny ahead of it. I havo been particularly pleased to notice the growing spirit of friendliness between the people of New Zealand and the people of the United States, and I have found a ready response to any expressed desire of mine for a better' understanding. We shall take home pleasant memories of New Zealand and the kindness and hospitality we have experienced here, and shall continue to take a lively persona^interest in the progress of this country."
