PORT OF NEW PLYMOUTH
IMPROVEMENT SCHEME.
EXPENDITURE OF £600,000. . NEW WHARF IN CONCRETE. [BX TELEGRAPH.— dWN CORRESPONDENT.] ; NEW PLYMOUTH; Wednesday. The . sanction given to the New Plymouth Harbour Board yesterday to borrow £600,000 marks the first step in an important development scheme which aims to provide 33ft. of water in the harbour, and to give accommodation for five overseas liners at the same time. The chairman of the Harbour Board stated to-day that tho board will immediately have plans prepared, these involving further extension of the breakwater, construction of a new wharf in concrete, and dredging to give from 33ft. to 35ft. of water. The vast expansion in trade recently made a second wharf imperative, but even with this added facility the port cannot yet cope with the demands.
