SMART POSTAL WORK.
DELIVERING NTAGARA'S MAIL.
VALUE OF AGENTS ON BOAT.
The value of. cairying mail agents on the Pacific mail steamers was emphasised yesterday on the arrival of the Royal Mail steamer Niagara i.-i Auckland, from Vancouver. The vess-'l brought 800 bags of English and American mails for New Zealand.
Almost immediately after tho Niagara anchored at 10.40 a.m. the Postal Department's chartered tender Young Bungareo was alongside the vessel to receive the local mails. With 56 bags of letters for Auckland the tender was back at the wharf before 11 a.m., and the mails reached the chief post office five minutes after that hour. Before noon the letters had been sorted and placed in the private, boxes.' The city and suburban letters were sent out by the two o'clock delivery.
The smart work in connection whh tho Niagara's mail was brought about by tho mail agents on the vessel, who sort tho New Zealand mail into districts, with the local mails on top ready to bo unloaded at the first opportunity. The early delivery of the Niagara's mails gave Auckland merchants sufficient time to despatch answers, if necessary, by the outward mail, which closcd in Auckland last evening. and will be forwarded on the Royal Mail steamer-Tahiti, which leaves Wellington for San Francisco to-day.
