THE WAIRERE SETTLEMENT.
LAND BOARD FINANCING WORK.

TE AROHA. Monday.
At tho Hungahunga Drainage Board meeting the chairman, Mr. F. E. Hughes, reporting on the Waircre soldiers' settlement drainage pioposals, said that the Land Board was taking the matter in hand and would be responsible for the cost, none of which would fall on the drainage board. Tho total cost, he understood, would be about £900, and the Land Board was to get in touch with Mr. Johnson, the engineer. The work would bo carried out by the board.
The necessity for altering the course of the Wairere eastern outlet drain through -Trethways was referred to, and it was pointed "out that an improvement could lie effected bv striking the board's dnr.n in a direct line at Burke's. It was resolved that the engineer submit a schcmo at the next meeting. It was further decided that the engineer be instructed to complete Parke and Company's contract in the Piranui area, provided sufficient money remained out of subsidy and loan. Tim engineer reported that he had let the Waiwhero western outlet contract at £1 per chain. Plans bad been prepared for the first portion of the South Waihokau loan expenditure, and awaited Government approval. It was suggested that the board invite tenders early in January. The set of by-laws prepared by* the Elstow Drainage Board was placed before tho meeting, and the chairman and Mr. Hansen were appointed to attend a conferonce to discuss them.
