ELECTIONS IN AMERICA.
CONTROL IN BOTH HOUSES.
COOLIDGE'S DEFINITE VICTORY.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright A. and N.Z. NEW YOEK. Nov. 7. The election returns to date give the following as the totals of the popular and electoral college votes gained by the three chief candidates for the Presidency :—
Electoral • Popular College Votes. Votes. Mr. Calvin Coolidge. ; 15,000,000 379 Mr. J. W. Davis . . 8,171,000 139 Mr. R. M. La Follette 4,136,000 13 ,The Republicans have elected 19 senators and the Democrats 13. The new Senate will probably be constituted as follows: —Republicans 54. Democrats 41, Farmer-Labour 1. This would give the Republicans a working majority of four in spite of the presence of the Radicals, Senators Ladd, Norris, Frazier and La Follette.
The House of Representatives will probably be constituted as follows:—Republicans 242, Democrats 194, Farmer-Lab-our 3, Socialists 2. The present House comprises 220 Republicans, 207 Democrats, one Farmer-Labour, one Socialist, and one Independent. There are f.ve vacant seats.
The Republicans have elected 21 State Governors and the Democrats 12.
The Ku Klux Klan appears to have gained' notable victories in many States. The following candidates whom the Klan supported have been elected:—Governors of Indiana and Kansas; Senator, Governor and the complete State "ticket." Colorado; Senator, Oklahoma; and many candidates in Montana. The Klan sutfered defeat in Texas, where Mrs. Ferguson was elected Governor. Three women were elected to the Wisconsin State Legislature and five to that of New Jeraey. Kentucky re-elected as its representative Mr. Langley, who is under a two years' sentence of imprisonment for violation of the prohibition laws.
Mr. Al Smith, Governor of New York, emerges as the natural leader of the Democrat party. He was the only Democrat on the State " ticket " who was elected in New York, which was otherwise overwhelmingly Republican.
